"Establishing a rubric for assessing the various non-profits was a difficult task for the rubric committee, primarily because there were so many different ways that it could be structured. The main goals that we were trying to achieve while forming the rubric were creating the form so that it could analyze an organization objectively, emphasize a focus on assessing outcome over output, and be honestly answerable, beyond getting a simple "yes" or highest number on the scale from those who specialized in researching the non-profit. This was important to us as we already knew from personal experience that there will most likely be emotional attachments from the students to the organization they interviewed, and we wanted every organization to have a fair and extensive evaluation, with personal feelings set aside as much as possible. We also deliberated at length about which sections should be scaled heavier than other sections, and how to incorporate if the non-profit fits with the class mission statement well or not. The main question that we hope our rubric pushes is: how do the site’s services actually make people’s lives better?"
